He disappeared along with three of his children, aged 12, 10, and 9, while his wife, Andrea, and their youngest daughter, Mar, 7, were rescued. The accident occurred during the family's vacation in Bali when the tourist boat they were on sank near Komodo National Park. Of the 11 people on board, seven were rescued.
