According to Scientists for Global Responsibility, the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico, will produce the highest greenhouse gas emissions in the history of the competition, with an estimated 9 million tons of CO2 equivalent. This is almost double the average of recent tournaments and significantly higher than Qatar 2022 emissions. Although FIFA has pledged to reduce emissions, regulators have challenged claims about the sustainability of the 2022 event.
