In 2023, a legislative change in Romania led to the cancellation of identity cards for over 160,000 people, most of whom were born in the Republic of Moldova. This action is part of 'Operation Bulletin', aimed at combating the phenomenon of fictitious 'taking up space'.
A major concern is the loss of state allowances for children with Romanian citizenship, including those with dual Romanian-Moldovan citizenship. The Ministry of Labor in Romania clarified that the payment of the allowance will not be affected by issues related to the identity documents of the parents. Thus, children will continue to receive the allowances, ensuring that the legislative changes will not have a negative impact on them.
