The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Munteanu, emphasized the importance of respecting the law by all citizens, including parishioners, following a conflict between two Orthodox communities in the village of Dereneu. This conflict escalated in February when parishioners entered a church ceded to a rival branch, generating accusations of religious persecution.
The incident was amplified on social media, and the prime minister stated that it is the responsibility of the communities to resolve their disputes without government involvement. He also mentioned that six people were detained following the violent incidents.
The situation was exacerbated by existing tensions since 2018, when parishioners attempted to take control of the church.
The Minister of Culture confirmed that the church is a historical monument and that the Ministry of Culture is committed to protecting it.
