Alexandru Bălan, former deputy of the Information and Security Service (SIS) of the Republic of Moldova, has been sentenced to one and a half years in prison for treason, according to the General Prosecutor's Office. Bălan was found guilty of disclosing state secrets to the KGB of Belarus and requested the examination of the case in a simplified procedure, acknowledging his guilt. He was also deprived of the right to hold public office for two and a half years.
At the time of his arrest, Bălan was under house arrest in Bucharest. He also holds Romanian citizenship and is accused of treason in Romania, having been detained on September 8, 2025, in Timișoara, for actions that allegedly endangered national security. The investigation by Moldovan prosecutors revealed that Bălan's meetings with KGB officers took place between 2024 and 2025, in Budapest.
