President Nicușor Dan has reportedly agreed with Prime Minister-designate Ilie Bolojan to increase VAT from 19% to 21% by 2027, while keeping VAT at 9% for food and medicines. Economists warn that the hike will spur price hikes and could lead to recession by curbing consumption. The VAT talks have sparked controversy in political negotiations to form the new government, with Bolojan seen as the right man for the necessary adjustments in the state.
