USR Deputy Alexandru Dimitriu has submitted a draft law aimed at simplifying the mechanism for recovering damages for Romanians and the state affected by the artificial increase of ROBOR, caused by agreements between banks. The project aims to provide real compensation to those affected, not just penalties for banks, considering that in 2022 ROBOR increased by over 6 percentage points, which significantly raised the rates for millions of Romanians.
Estimates show that an additional percentage point in ROBOR generates extra costs of approximately 225 million lei per month. The project amends OUG 170/2020, establishing a clear mechanism to maximize the chances of recovering damages. Individuals will be able to act in court as plaintiffs, and the Ministry of Finance will have the role of undertaking legal actions to recover the compensations from the authorities.
