A draft law tabled by the UDMR proposes to extend the mandate of local elected representatives from four to five years to ensure political stability and local development.

According to the UDMR proposal, mayors, deputy mayors, local and county councillors would have 5-year terms, to allow medium and long-term planning of development projects. The draft would not extend current mandates, but would come into force after this year's elections and would be debated in Parliament.
