Interim Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna believes that the authorities in Bucharest should negotiate with the European Commission a one-year moratorium that would allow Romania to remain at the budget deficit level of 2026.

Tanczos Barna, acting deputy prime minister of Romania, stated that the country should initiate negotiations with the European Commission to obtain a one-year moratorium. This measure would allow Romania to maintain the budget deficit at the same level as in 2026 and in the following year. The proposal comes in the context of the economic challenges facing Romania, and Barna believes that such a moratorium would provide the necessary financial flexibility to support economic development. The details of the negotiations and the potential impact on the Romanian economy will be discussed further, and the authorities hope to reach a favorable agreement with Brussels.

"I believe we should discuss, negotiate with the European Commission a one-year moratorium, to remain at this year's deficit because a reduction of the deficit next year by another percentage will be an extremely, extremely painful issue. This year, there have been European funds or cheap loans from the PNRR. So without significant investments during a period of economic regression, the economy will suffer even more, and consumption will decrease even more, and the revenues to the state budget will be even smaller. We cannot only look at the revenue side; those who have done accounting know that on the debit and credit side, the account must be balanced. We also need revenues; the private economy must be supported on one hand by stable internal consumption, and on the other hand by investments and orders from the state, where possible," said Tanczos Barna on Wednesday evening, at Euronews Romania.
