The Senate of Romania tacitly adopted on Tuesday a bill that provides for material compensation for Romanians affected by natural disasters or armed conflicts.

According to the legislation, individuals who suffer damages will receive compensation within 90 days of the incident, covering the actual value of the losses, according to market prices. The project, initiated by PSD parliamentarians, amends Article 18 of Law no. 481/2004 regarding civil protection. Additionally, municipalities are required to rebuild the affected properties within one year and to provide accommodation for the affected individuals until the completion of the works. In cases where municipalities lack funds, the government will intervene from the emergency fund, having the possibility to recover the amounts from those responsible.

The law was initiated as a result of the explosion in October at an apartment building in the Rahova neighborhood.

The Chamber of Deputies will have the final word in adopting this legislative proposal.
