President Nicușor Dan declared that Romania voted in favor of the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), after negotiating additional measures to protect Romanian producers. The agreement will create one of the largest free trade areas in the world, allowing Romania to export products without high customs duties. Dan emphasized that, following the negotiations, important concessions were obtained for sensitive agricultural sectors, including the protection of certain Romanian products.
Additionally, the agreement provides for the elimination of customs duties on 91% of products imported from the EU, which will facilitate Romanian exports in areas such as transport equipment and agri-food products. Romania will benefit from an additional amount of up to 45 billion euros for the Common Agricultural Policy, as a result of requests to support farmers.
The PSD criticized the Foreign Ministry's decision to support the agreement, demanding clarifications regarding the protection of Romanian farmers. The party announces that it will use all available levers to modify the agreement in favor of Romania's agricultural interests.
