Romania is facing the most severe measles crisis in the European Union, with over 35,000 cases and at least 30 deaths between 2023-2025. Doctors, such as Dr. Mirela Csabai, emphasize that the collapse of the vaccination rate, which has reached 81% for the first dose and 60% for the second, represents a major threat. In 2010, Romania had a vaccination rate of 93%, but this has steadily declined, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Structural issues, such as poverty and lack of access to vaccines, contribute to this crisis. Vaccination is not mandatory, and the responsibility has been transferred to family doctors, leading to bureaucracy and pressure on the system. Additionally, anti-vaccine groups have gained ground, amplifying parents' fears. Doctors suggest creating community vaccination centers and expanding the right to vaccinate to other doctors to improve the situation. Dr. Csabai and others are trying to gain parents' trust to prevent future epidemics, but the challenges remain significant.
