New York State Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide state of emergency on Monday amid the spread of a measles outbreak in rural communities with low immunization rates. This year, 108 cases have been reported, and authorities are trying to limit the disease's transmission.
The emergency order expands the category of people authorized to administer the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The measure aims to facilitate access to vaccination in affected areas and accelerate the response of health authorities.
The decision comes as neighboring Pennsylvania is also dealing with a measles outbreak that has resulted in five deaths. Measles is an extremely contagious disease, and the risk of spread increases in communities where vaccination coverage is insufficient.
