Although he promised during the election campaign that VAT would not increase, President Nicușor Dan accepted the VAT increase, considering it a realistic solution in cooperation with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. In a press conference, Dan explained that the financial analysis showed the necessity of this measure, and to avoid the VAT increase, a complex set of administrative measures would have been needed, which was not finalized in time. This decision was part of the fiscal package undertaken by the government.
