The Mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, proposes the elimination of free public transport for pensioners who have pensions higher than 3,000 lei, according to information obtained by Adevărul. This initiative is still under analysis and may undergo changes, considering that Ciucu does not have a majority in the General Council. The municipality is facing major operational issues and is forced to reduce expenses and increase revenues. Subsidies for public transport and thermal energy represent approximately 2.5 billion lei, which is half of the Capital's budget. In a recent General Council meeting, several of the mayor's projects were rejected, including the increase of fares for STB. Currently, about 160,000 pensioners in Bucharest benefit from free transport, but this facility could be revised if Ciucu manages to gain the support of the parties in the General Council.
