Ionuț Moșteanu, the Minister of Defense, stated that he opposes a 10% cut in salary expenditures from the national defense system, arguing that the sector should be exempt from these measures, considering the regional security context. He emphasized that the understanding within the coalition was that defense should not be affected, especially under the conditions in which Romania faces external challenges. Moșteanu asserted that it is essential to increase the defense budget from 2.3% to 5% of GDP by 2035, in order to meet the military's equipment needs.
He also mentioned that personnel cuts are not a viable option, given the need to recruit and motivate soldiers. He proposed optimizations in other areas but emphasized that investments in defense are a priority. Moșteanu concluded by expressing confidence that the coalition leaders will understand the realities the country is facing.
