Former Education Minister Daniel Funeriu plans to run as an independent candidate in the presidential elections to defeat Călin Georgescu.

Funeriu said he has been contacted by representatives of the ruling coalition parties, but remains determined to run as an independent. He criticizes weak candidates produced by a "system of counter-selection" in the parties and argues that presidential elections should be held as soon as possible, but above all, fairly.
