The former president of Romania, Traian Băsescu, stated that the plan B for Europe, in the context of Donald Trump's dissatisfaction with NATO, should be the establishment of a European Army. He emphasized that this army should be a partner of NATO, but should no longer depend on an unstable leader like Trump, who, in his opinion, favors Putin's interests.
Băsescu warned that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons and criticized the American strategy in this regard, mentioning that the smart military solution should come from the USA. He emphasized that, in the event that Iran emerged victorious, it could close the Strait of Hormuz and create instability in the Middle East.
The former president proposed the development of regional alliances, such as the Romania-Poland-Turkey trilateral, to ensure regional defense. He pointed out that European democracies do not operate like the USA, where a president can make unilateral decisions. Băsescu concluded that Europe needs to build its own alliances to respond to current challenges.
