Former president Traian Băsescu stated that Romania, under the leadership of president Nicușor Dan, must respond quickly to the requests of the United States regarding the deployment of troops and fighter jets at Mihail Kogălniceanu airbase.
Băsescu mentioned that, in the context of tensions in the Middle East, the US may need this base, emphasizing the importance of an agreement signed in 2005 that allows access for the American military. He criticized Donald Trump's approach in the relationship with Romania and stressed that access to Kogălniceanu for operations in the Middle East should come at a cost.
In this context, the Supreme Council of National Defense met to discuss the implications of the situation in the Middle East on Romania and to evaluate the temporary deployment of military capabilities on national territory.
