A study published by the European Commission on October 20, 2026, warns about the expansion of online financial fraud in the gambling industry. The analysis shows how fake betting platforms use deceptive advertisements, imitated visual identities, and unrealistic promises to attract consumers and obtain their money.
According to the report, some websites present themselves as licensed operators, although they may manipulate results, display fictitious winnings, or block withdrawals. Fraud often becomes apparent only when users try to withdraw their money, after being persuaded to make additional deposits.
The methods used include copying well-known brands, false endorsements by public figures, and fabricated materials that imitate news reports. The study also mentions content generated with the help of artificial intelligence, including deepfake videos that falsely associate celebrities or athletes with betting services.
The Commission recommends verifying the operator’s authorization, accessing platforms through official channels, reading the terms and conditions, and keeping evidence of payments and withdrawal requests. Suspicions should be reported to the authorities and, where appropriate, to the financial services provider.
The report emphasizes that consumer protection cannot depend solely on individual vigilance. Operators, authorities, banks, and advertising platforms must cooperate to identify and eliminate fraud.
