Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the global economy has been receiving blow after blow. But beyond growth, stagnation, or recession, beyond the inflation rate, beyond the energy crisis, beyond the collapse or stagnation of stock markets, the economy is marked by an invisible, corrosive erosion: the systematic dissipation of trust. We are no longer in a simple information crisis, but in a profound crisis of discernment. In a world where data is abundant, but its meaning is fractured, the ability to separate signal from noise has become the rarest strategic asset.

For decades, stability has relied on an implicit contract: technocratic institutions manage complex mechanisms, and the citizen, in return, offers their trust. Today, this contract is on the brink of moral bankruptcy, across multiple meridians of the world, and we feel it acutely in Romanian society. Joseph E. Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize laureate, emphasizes the gravity of the moment: "Trust is not just a lubricant for the economy; it is the foundation upon which democracy rests." For Romania, Stiglitz's warning is a wake-up call: a society that prioritizes speculative success and political noise at the expense of truth fragments into hostile groups, leaving the citizen without any anchor of certainty.

This fragmentation is fueled by the rise of Artificial Intelligence, where "synthetic truth" can be manufactured on an industrial scale. At this point, the crisis of discernment becomes a national security issue. Jake Sullivan – former National Security Advisor of the United States from 2021 to 2025, currently a professor in the field of diplomacy and world order at Harvard Kennedy School – perfectly describes this existential deadlock: "In a world of perfect falsehood, the ability to verify becomes more precious than the ability to innovate." If we can no longer distinguish between a real economic analysis and one generated to manipulate markets, trust becomes a "high-risk sport." The economy no longer relies on numbers, but on our resilience in the face of manipulation.

On the geopolitical front, we are witnessing the end of "blind globalization." And Richard Haass speaks of an "archipelago of trust." Haass is the president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, a professor at New York University, former director of the Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. State Department (2001–2003), and special envoy of President George W. Bush for Northern Ireland, as well as coordinator for the Future of Afghanistan. According to him, international trade no longer seeks the lowest production cost, but the highest political affinity and legal predictability. For Europe, this "archipelago" means that proximity to Euro-Atlantic values is no longer just a diplomatic ideal, but a condition for economic survival. Investments no longer come where labor is cheap, but where the "partner's word" still has exchange value. And Romania finds itself exactly at the confluence of these currents and seems to have to decide: will it become a safe harbor in this archipelago or remain a drifting boat among islands?

We must not forget that, on the financial front, trust is the essence and substance of currency: "any currency is, in essence, an act of faith" (Carmen M. Reinhart, former chief economist of the World Bank). When fiscal policies become unpredictable, the decline in trust in the state's ability to honor long-term promises dangerously amplifies. The future will not necessarily belong to the most technologically advanced nations, but to those who will manage to keep intact the contract of trust between people, markets, and institutions.

If discernment is the new form of capital, trust becomes the most valuable currency of exchange.
