Ion Cernea, born on October 21, 1935 in Râu Alb, Dâmbovița, died last night after a three-week hospitalization. He worked as an athlete and coach at CS Dinamo between 1958 and 1990, winning two Olympic medals (silver in 1960, bronze in 1964) and two world medals (gold in 1965, silver in 1961). As a coach, he trained many Olympic and world medallists. Ion Cernea was married to the famous folk singer Irina Loghin.
