The draft legislation currently under public debate provides for the introduction of a digitally signed QR code in simple temporary passports in order to improve their security, which currently do not contain biometric data. The QR code will be implemented by September 1, 2025 and will allow optical verification of the document's authenticity according to international standards. This will bring Romania in line with international requirements on the security of travel documents and reduce the risks of fraud and counterfeiting.
