Romania carried out almost 200,000 random checks at its Schengen borders in the first two months after joining the EU.

<p>Romanian authorities reported more than 9,500 cases of offenses uncovered following some 193,000 checks. Cigarette smuggling was one of the most frequently encountered crimes, with more than 1,380,000 cigarettes seized. Close cooperation with neighboring countries was underlined as essential in preventing and combating illegal activities at common borders.
