The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS reaches its closest distance to Earth today, at approximately 270 million kilometers, providing a final opportunity for terrestrial observers to study it. Discovered on July 1, 2025, the comet has exhibited strange behaviors, including unusual emissions of carbon dioxide, hydrogen cyanide, and methanol, as it approaches the Sun. Recent observations have revealed a greenish hue of the tail, generated by diatomic carbon, although initially the comet had a reddish tint. These observations suggest that 3I/ATLAS may have a rich metallic composition or could become an asteroid. Although its peculiarities raise questions, all researchers agree that it is a comet, making it a fascinating subject for the study of the interstellar environment.
