German company Isar Aerospace successfully launched the Spectrum rocket on Saturday from Andøya Spaceport, in Norway’s Arctic region. The uncrewed vehicle carried five small satellites and a technology experiment on board, in a qualification mission and its first flight with a payload.

The success represents an important step in developing Europe’s commercial satellite launch services. Norway’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Cecilie Myrseth, highlighted both the event’s industrial importance and its relevance to Europe’s security and its ability to place satellites into orbit directly from the continent.

The mission comes approximately a year and a half after the company’s first test. In March 2025, the Isar Aerospace rocket crashed into the sea and exploded shortly after launch, with no casualties. The company used the data obtained to improve the system.

Europe is trying to reduce its dependence on external providers in a market dominated by SpaceX. Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are developing their own launch infrastructure, while Isar Aerospace has received approximately 200 million euros from the European Space Agency for new rockets and testing facilities.
