Google has decided to invest up to 40 billion dollars in Anthropic, an artificial intelligence start-up, including 10 billion paid immediately. This move underscores the intensifying competition with OpenAI, in the context of a fierce battle for capital and the computing power necessary to train AI models. Although Google is developing its own AI models, such as Gemini, the investment in Anthropic reflects its strategy to collaborate with emerging start-ups. Google has also invested billions in Anthropic and collaborates with it to provide TPU chips and Google Cloud services. The two companies plan to bring online approximately 5 gigawatts of data center capacity starting next year, in the context of the rapid increase in the use of Anthropic's products, such as Claude Code. Meanwhile, Amazon has announced a separate agreement to initially invest 5 billion dollars in Anthropic, with the possibility of reaching 20 billion over time.
