The research identified six distinct tactics used by virtual assistants, such as Replika or Character.AI, to prolong interaction, ranging from questions about why the user leaves so quickly to a direct refusal to let the user go. Despite the increase in short-term engagement, the study highlights the ethical and emotional risks of these practices.
