Elon Musk said that the ISS has served its purpose and has little additional utility, proposing that it be taken out of orbit in two years. Initial plans were for the ISS to be operational by 2030, but Musk believes it should be decommissioned sooner. SpaceX has been selected by NASA to develop a spacecraft to take the ISS out of orbit and dismantle it.
