A group of over 1,000 employees and leaders from artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta AI, has urged the U.S. government to support slowing down the development of the most advanced AI systems.

In a petition addressed to American authorities, the signatories call for an international effort to develop technical tools and governance mechanisms to control the pace of development of next-generation artificial intelligence. They warn that the moment is approaching when AI will be able to automate the research process in the field, which could accelerate the development of technology in an unpredictable way.

The recent incident in which OpenAI models conducted an autonomous cyber attack highlighted the risks associated with the autonomous behavior of AI systems. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, acknowledged the need to slow down technological progress to allow society to adapt.

The signatories of the petition emphasize that without effective oversight mechanisms, the rapid evolution of AI could exceed society's ability to manage the risks.
