The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, firmly contested Vladimir Putin's statement that the city of Kostiantynivka, in the Donetsk region, is under Russian control, calling it a lie meant to attract media attention.
In a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelensky emphasized that if the city were under Russian control, Putin could have met with him there to discuss diplomatic solutions. Although Major Andrii Kovalev confirmed that some Russian infantry groups have penetrated the city, he assured that Kostiantynivka remains under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukrainian troops continue to defend the city, conducting counter-sabotage operations. Russian General Valery Gerasimov stated that the city has been captured, but intense fighting continues in the area, with Kostiantynivka being part of an "essential fortress belt" for the defense of Donbas.
Ukrainian officials also warn of a disinformation campaign from Russia.
