The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived on Tuesday at the White House, with the main goal of requesting air defense systems from President Trump, at a critical moment in the war in Ukraine. This visit comes less than a year and a half after a previous, less favorable meeting.
Zelensky is also participating in the memorial service for Senator Lindsey Graham, a supporter of Ukraine. The Ukrainian president emphasized that missile defense is the number one priority in his discussions with Trump.
Although relations between the two have improved, the war in Ukraine continues without a clear end in sight. Zelensky will seek to obtain Patriot missiles and finalize a drone agreement with the U.S., in the context where the Pentagon has informed Congress that it will not fully spend the approved aid until 2029. This visit underscores the urgent need for military support for Ukraine, while criticism over the delay in aid continues to grow.
