Zelensky and Trump have agreed to meet in New York / “The meeting could change many things”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday that he had spoken by phone with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, and that the two had agreed to meet in New York at the end of September. The meeting could reinvigorate diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

“I have just spoken with President Donald J. Trump (...) We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change many things. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelensky said on social media.

The Ukrainian leader thanked Trump for signing into law the sanctions against Russia initiated by Senator Lindsey Graham. Zelensky has repeatedly called for severe and swift measures against Moscow, which he says must be prevented from maintaining its missile production capabilities.

The announcement comes after American envoys visited Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to revive negotiations that have been stalled since the beginning of the year. Approximately two weeks ago, Zelensky said he intended to meet with Trump in New York.

The two leaders’ most recent face-to-face meeting took place in July in Ankara, on the sidelines of the NATO summit. Their relationship had previously been marked by the dispute in the Oval Office in February 2025, which Trump later said had been overcome.
