The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe and under Russian control, was reconnected to the power grid on Saturday, after losing external power completely for nearly three days. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), power was restored thanks to repairs made on a backup supply line, facilitated by a local ceasefire. During the outage, the plant had to use diesel generators to maintain the cooling of the reactors.

This was the 19th time since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 that the plant has experienced such a blackout, highlighting the fragility of the power grid. The IAEA confirmed that no radioactive leaks were detected, and levels remain normal. The Zaporozhye plant, located near the front line, was captured by Russia in the early days of the invasion, and Ukraine and Russia continue to accuse each other of the nuclear risks associated with attacks near it.
