Yomiuri Shimbun, a leading Japanese newspaper, has accused the US artificial intelligence company Perplexity of 'gratuitously exploiting' its content through its search engine, seeking damages of 2.2 billion yen. The lawsuit, filed in Tokyo, is the first of its kind by a major Japanese news organization. The newspaper alleges that unauthorized use of its articles undermines journalism and democracy. It joins other global legal actions against AI firms.
