Cheng, who will take over the leadership of the KMT on November 1, avoided explicitly mentioning unification with Beijing, stating that 'both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the Chinese nation.' Tensions between China and Taiwan have increased, with Beijing considering Taiwan Chinese territory, while the government in Taipei rejects these claims. The KMT's internal elections have been overshadowed by accusations of interference from China, with supporters of Cheng's opponent claiming disinformation campaigns. The DPP, the ruling party, has accused the KMT of Chinese influence, while the KMT has denied these accusations.
