The World Health Organization announced that the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius ship has ended.

On Thursday, the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that the hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius has ended, after the last person in contact with a confirmed case completed quarantine and tested negative. The outbreak was associated with 13 cases, including three deaths, and over 650 contacts were monitored in 33 countries.

WHO will continue to collaborate with governments to better understand hantavirus and will coordinate an international study to develop diagnostics and treatments. The MV Hondius ship departed on April 1 from Ushuaia and was forced to remain in quarantine after the virus was discovered, evacuating over 120 passengers on May 10. Although the link between deaths and hantavirus has not been confirmed, the origins of the outbreak remain unidentified.
