The killing of the Jalisco cartel leader, Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho", has generated severe violence in Mexico, with his supporters blocking highways and setting vehicles and stores on fire. Tourists in Puerto Vallarta have been advised to stay indoors, and airlines such as Air Canada and United Airlines have canceled flights to the tourist destination.
Authorities have not reported casualties outside of cartel members, but a representative of the Jalisco New Generation cartel warned that the violence will continue as revenge for the leader's death. In the state of Jalisco, armed attacks have targeted military police, and public transport has been suspended. Violent incidents have also been reported in other states, and authorities have acknowledged that the situation is under control, but fear persists among residents.
