Protesters charge that his wedding would close the city for a private event, and Greenpeace has placed a critical banner at the venue. Although the wedding has been moved, a group of local businesses support Bezos' choice to celebrate in Venice. Bezos has donated €1 million to protect the city's environment, a gesture he sees as a show of love for Venice.
