Venezuela has informed the UN about its 'irrevocable' decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), citing a 'partisanship' of the institution against countries in the Global South.
Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia stated that the actions of the ICC reflect a geographical bias, disproportionately focusing on African and Latin American countries. This withdrawal comes after the ICC announced an investigation into possible crimes against humanity committed by the Venezuelan government during the protests in 2017.
Criticism has been directed at the ICC for the unequal application of standards between leaders from the West and those from the Global South. The announcement comes in the context of Venezuela's rapprochement with U.S. policy, following a military action that led to the ousting of former president Nicolas Maduro.
There is also discussion about a possible restoration of relations with Israel, in the context of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu being accused by the ICC of war crimes in Gaza.
