The Trump administration is preparing sanctions against the International Criminal Court

The administration of President Donald Trump has prepared sanctions against the entire International Criminal Court (ICC), which it intends to announce soon, according to sources cited by Reuters. The exact timing of the decision is unclear, but it could be finalized as early as this week during the United Nations General Assembly meeting, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The measure would represent a major escalation of Washington’s pressure on the tribunal in The Hague. The United States has already imposed sanctions on some ICC judges and prosecutors, but has not so far targeted the institution as a whole. The Trump administration wants the court to drop the arrest warrants issued for several Israeli leaders and its investigation into alleged crimes committed by U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan.

The sanctions could also target entities that cooperate with the ICC. U.S. citizens and companies would be prohibited from providing the tribunal with funds, goods or services without a special license issued by the U.S. Treasury. The measure could affect IT services, insurance, the recruitment of investigators and the Court’s routine financial operations.

The United States is not a member of the ICC, which was established in 2002 to investigate war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. The State Department did not comment on the reports.
