In a new escalation of the trade conflict, the US has threatened to impose 17% tariffs on EU agricultural exports ahead of a July 9 deadline for a deal. Although President Trump has previously cut the tariff to 10% to allow negotiations, European officials are rejecting the US proposals. The EU is seeking exemptions for certain products, and the European Commission is preparing retaliatory measures, including tariffs of €21 billion on US exports.
