First in Bundesliga: Marie-Louise Eta, the first woman coach of a men's team

Union Berlin has decided to appoint Marie-Louise Eta as head coach until the end of the season, following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart, who was fired after a 1-3 defeat against the bottom-placed team, FC Heidenheim. The team is currently in 11th place in the Bundesliga, 11 points clear of the automatic relegation zone, having only two victories in the last 14 league matches.

Eta, at 34 years old, made history by becoming the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga, at the same club, in November 2023. A former youth international for Germany and a winner of the Women's Champions League, she has been working as the coach of Union Berlin's under-19 team since July 2025. Horst Heldt, the director of the men's football department, stated that the poor performances in recent weeks prompted the club to change the technical structure. Marie-Louise Eta will debut as head coach in the match against Wolfsburg, a crucial game for staying in the league, scheduled for Saturday at the Alte Försterei stadium.
