Ukrainian refugees due to the Russian invasion can submit compensation claims to a body of the Council of Europe

The Council of Europe has announced that Ukrainian refugees, forced to leave their country due to the Russian invasion, can submit compensation claims through the Damage Register, an entity created in 2023 under the auspices of the institution. This register aims to document human rights violations and quantify the compensations that will be requested from Russia in the future.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, emphasized the importance of accountability in the process of Ukraine's recovery and sustainable peace. Refugees can seek compensation for various consequences of the war, including forced displacement, the death of relatives, and the destruction of homes.

So far, over 110,000 claims have been received, and the Council of Europe recognizes the significant psychological impact of displacement on the family lives of affected individuals.

According to UNHCR, 6.8 million Ukrainians remain outside the country.
