The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, sent chief negotiator Rustem Umerov to the USA to meet with Donald Trump's emissaries, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. This visit comes against the backdrop of a deadlock in peace negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, mediated by Washington. Umerov left Ukraine on Wednesday, and the meeting aims to discuss diplomatic and security matters.
Although Ukrainian officials claim to have maintained contact with the American side, Zelensky acknowledged that US attention has shifted towards the Middle East, which has weakened pressure on Russia. Russian leader Vladimir Putin continues to demand Ukraine's withdrawal from Donbas, while Kiev refuses to give up territories. In recent months, Ukraine has had to choose between accepting a peace treaty or continuing the fight, deciding to continue the confrontation. Witkoff and Kushner's visit, planned for Easter, was considered an ultimatum, but it did not take place, and Russia's interest in negotiations has decreased.
