Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, stated that Ukraine will need strong armed forces and solid security guarantees after the conclusion of any peace agreement with Russia.

In a press conference, he emphasized that the security interests of Europe and Ukraine are at stake, and discussions with the USA and Ukraine are ongoing. Merz highlighted the importance of a well-equipped army for Ukraine, mentioning that it is premature to discuss the deployment of international troops.

He also stressed that Ukraine should not be forced to cede territory, and the front line should be the basis for any future negotiations. European countries suggest a limit of 800,000 soldiers for Ukraine, in contrast to the peace plan proposed by the USA, which provided for 600,000.
