In the QS World University Rankings 2025, Oxford has dropped to 4th and Cambridge to 6th, with 54 out of 90 UK universities falling. Challenges include intensified global competition, declining research funding and difficulties in attracting academics. In addition, the UK government is proposing an additional fee for international students, which could discourage enrolment. This also affects the tech ecosystem in Europe, which lags behind the US and China.
