The United Kingdom will allocate 17 million pounds, equivalent to approximately 23 million dollars, for essential repairs at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was damaged by an attack involving Russian drones. The announcement was made on Thursday, October 15, by the British finance and foreign ministers, amid intensified support for Ukraine.
The funding will be used to restore the protective shelter and ventilation system, both of which were damaged in last year's attack. Authorities fear that the damage and corrosion could, over time, create risks to the environment and nuclear safety. The damage caused to the plant is estimated at tens of millions of pounds.
London's commitment was announced after Prime Minister Andy Burnham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street. Burnham said that British support for Ukraine would continue and argued that it was essential for protecting British citizens.
The United Kingdom also announced the delivery of surface-to-air missiles worth 45 million pounds, capable of combating Russian drones with jet engines.
