Uber reported an operating profit of $172 million for the first quarter, below analysts' expectations.

The company attributed the shortfall to legal costs, including a $178 million payment to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by taxi drivers in Australia. Even with the weak results, the quarter still compared favorably to the losses reported in Q1 2022. Uber shares fell about 9% in early New York trading.
