The two men chopped down the Sycamore Gap tree, familiar from the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", causing international outrage. Their action, described as a "stupid mission", was well planned and the damage amounts to more than £458,000. During the trial, one of the men said he did not understand the emotion of destroying the tree, describing it as "just a tree". The felling of the tree also affected Hadrian's Wall and the National Trust felt a profound loss as a result.
